As part my research into cycling for the Oakley brief I decided to cycle more and document my observations. It was a nice sunny day, but it was windy, I made the following observations; ▪ The strong wind can push you about a bit, your clothes can make a difference ▪ You often don’t hear Traffic till it’s passed you ▪ I went to the shops and bought a few things carrying them my rucksack was not as tiring as when walking ▪ Despite the wind my rain-jacket shield me from the cold ▪ My legs felt the strain the most

A few thoughts on Velo: Bicycle Culture and Design

Velo was a really well illustrated book on the culture and designs of the cycling movement. The book featured some great projects, some of my favorites included; Aeolian Ride an interesting design project supporting bike lovers in the city. Formpasch a product that beautifully combines a Bike Pump with a Light. Last but not least Uncommon Projects did interesting research into a data sharing on a bike. SPEAKING SUN

Our concept is a reinterpretation of the barometer, making it more accessible for visually impaired people, who would be interested in a similar interaction with a device to be able to tell what the weather may be like: emphasis on the word may! The device instead of giving you exact weather predictions, is more based on the ancient rhyme “red sky at night, shepherds delight, red sky in the morning, shepherds warning.”. Similar to seeing this out of a window, the chosen interaction would be much like opening blinds in order to inspect the morning or evening sky.

The Shelter Project

This is the bamboo framework for the shelter designed to protect people from dangers in the rainforest such as wild animals. The framework will be covered in a paper mache and form a structure much like that of a wasp-nest which is waterproof. This project has been a great opportunity to explore nature and see its connections to design. Biomimicry is a great way to learn from nature in order to survive.

These are some pictures of a prototype of a project I’m working on to do with physical products and the Internet. The brief is to create a “twenty first century barometer”. The device should take infomation from the internet in and display it in a meaningful way without a screen. My idea was to create something poetic based on the old saying “Red sky at night shepherds delight. Red sky in the morning sailors warning.”
